Briar Hill continued his unbeaten record under rules to win the Slaney Novice Hurdle at Naas but William Hill have pushed him out to 16-1 from 10-1 for the Supreme Novices' Hurdle, with the Neptune or Albert Bartlett looking more likely targets. It leaves The Liquidator as the outright favourite for the Supreme at 10-1. Briar Hill is unchanged with William Hill at 10-1 for the Neptune, 7-1 for the Albert Bartlett and is 5-1 in William Hill's 'Win Any Race at 2014 Cheltenham Festival' market.

Willie Mullins' gelding won the Champion Bumper in 2013 and will seek to continue his perfect record under National Hunt rules at this year's Festival.

An irregular heart beat or "atrial fibrillation" was revealed by racecourse vets & confirmed by a specialist on Saturday morning. The same condition as Gold cup hero Denman. To Henderson's relief, the issue has been resolved naturally. Once he was given the "all clear" (for now) Henderson went on to say "you wouldn't rule out training him again this season". I take that as no indication as to when we will see Sacre again. Only time will tell when he will be back to his best. Henderson claims there is a chance he will still go to Cheltenham in march.

With the weather deteriorating, the tracks are getting on the softer side of soft. Cue the mudlarks. Saturday at Ascot, At Fishers Cross returned to try & improve on his seasonal debut and put a marker down for Cheltenham 2014. These plans were put to rest when Tony McCoy was unseated at the last. Reve De Sivola had already made his move for home & a blunder from Salubrious at the second last, left no challengers as the Nick Williams trained eight-year-old, passed the line 10 lengths ahead of second placeAt Fishers Cross with a similar blunder in the closing stages of the Long Distance Hurdle at Newbury last month is a slight concernTrainer Rebecca Curtis, earlier in the week said "I just hope we get a bit of rain in Ascot to soften things up a bit". Perhaps it was more than they had hoped for, but still no sign of the form we witnessed from him last seasonNo doubt it will take At Fishers Cross a few races to get back into his stride & we will see the same potential from the previous season. Houblon Des Obeaux & Easter Day were the only favourites to win leaving plenty of value for punters.

An almost faultless display left smiles all round for Walsh & Mullins as Un De Sceaux won with 29 lengths behind him. Un De Sceaux now goes 16/1 to win the Stanjames.com Champion Hurdle at Cheltenham.

Looking ahead, boxing day is bursting with potential. The King George chase will see some big names go head to head to prove their worth, including Cue Card, Al Ferof, Dynaste & Silviniaco Conti. the Christmas hurdle will most likely see The New One My Tent Or Yours collide as they look to prove themselves further.

I hope you all have a wonderful Christmas & plenty of luck on boxing day.

Tough Test for Raiders of the East

Some great racing this weekend, all around the world. Willie Mullins, in particular, had a very successful day. At Navan he sent out a force that would win over half the races on the card. Three of the four victories included specialist, Ruby Walsh. A day for the punter as short priced favourites stole the show, each rightfully so. Time & time again, a Mullins recruit crossed the line first. Over at Aintree, Mullins squeezed another. Paul Townend saw out victory on Gitane Du Berlais & did so with ease. Mystery Drama was ridden hard by Wayne Hutchinson to rally a challenge, but to no avail as Townend finished with time to spare. He had positive words to say of Gitane Du Berlais. "The long straight here suited her & her experience stood her in good stead. She jumped well & is a nice, big filly with plenty of scope. Her run in the north (Down Royal) wasn't bad as the first two have come out & done well since."

Almost 6000 miles across the world, Twenty eight challengers turned out from overseas to compete at Sha Tin, & did not disappoint. The Europeans main threats came in the form of The Fugue, Moonlight Cloud & Sky Lantern. From the anticipated three, only The Fugue made the frame, beaten by local runner Dominant. All failing to make the expected impression on the east, formidable opponents beat the raiders again & again. You can't help but question how well a horse handles the burdensome task of a long-haul flight, change over's & the ins and outs of the journey? No doubt some handle it better than others. Trainer of The Fugue, John Gosden said of The Fugue's condition "She has picked up well. It was a long journey – from London to Frankfurt, where she was on the ground for a time, before coming on to Hong Kong." "To that extent, she was a little quiet when she got here. Her temperature was good & her blood was good, which is important – she was just a little tired & quiet & not eating particularly well." No doubt the key to overseas success lies in race day conditioning. Pressure on those connected to get a quick turnaround if a horse is not at its best, & you'll need a real toughie to travel to the east & crack it

Gerard Butler Banned for 5 years after BHA Enquiry

Trainer Gerard Butler was disqualified for five years by the British Horseracing Authority (BHA) on Wednesday after nine horses in his care tested positive for the banned anabolic steroid stanozolol.

Irishman Butler, based in Newmarket, England, admitted injecting horses with a product for injured joints and faced seven charges of breaching the Rules of Racing.

A BHA disciplinary panel said Butler administered the prohibited substance Rexogin which contains stanozolol – the steroid used by disgraced Olympic sprinter Ben Johnson at the 1988 Seoul Olympics – to four horses using a method restricted by law to qualified veterinary surgeons.

The Cambridge Road trainer admitted to seven charges against him relating to samples of an anabolic steroid found in horses in his care.

Nine horses produced positive samples, five cases of which were identified as the joint treatment Sungate, which contains the banned anabolic steroid stanozolol.

Adam Brickell, the BHA's director of integrity, legal and risk said: "BHA's position, which was upheld by the disciplinary panel, was that the most serious charges related to Gerard Butler's gross failure to look after the best interests of four horses in his care," Brickell said.

Butler said on Wednesday: "I would like to spend the day composing myself and considering a response. I plan to issue a statement tomorrow afternoon.

"I watched my mother sign a card and put it on my brother's coffin. To get through this we will need a fraction of the strength that she needed to do that."

His ban will begin tomorrow and run until December 4 2018.
