Paul Nicholls makes big claims of Irving

If he's right, Irving has a real chance at cracking the Supreme Novices Hurdle at the Cheltenham Festival 2014, but will have to see off the likes of Vautour & Wicklow Brave. All in all a good day for Nicholls, winning half the card at Fairyhouse on Saturday.

Yesterday it was revealed, Sprinter Sacre has been pulled from this year's Champion Chase at The Cheltenham Festival. Nicky Henderson reassured racing fans it is not a problem with Sacre's heart, but the stable star has been below par in training & "not showing the same brilliance as he did last season". Now we will not see the excellence of Sprinter Sacre until next season. Who knows if he can accomplish the same feats as last season, or if he'll ever be the same. we'll have to play the waiting game to find out.

Zaidpour denied as Dungib strikes back to winning ways

An action packed Saturday in the UK & Ireland as stable stars from all over the country set out to make some noise. The first of the day for Mullins & Walsh came in the form of Turban. After Bog Warrior & Aupcharlie fell at the second last Mullins' French runner only had O'Connell's 10/1 shot, Argocat to beat. Coming over the last Argocat showed no signs of slowing, keeping a well tuned rhythm. Turban managed to stay on to challenge but the line came too quick as Argocat made all. Ascot held the grand national trial which saw Teaforthree go clear cut favourite for the feat in April, despite a close second. Teaforthree showed real heart when battling to the line with Restless harry but couldn't close in time. Rebecca Curtis trained Teaforthree has had a problem or two with regards to the 10 year olds preparations, but looks to have things back on track. Noel Fehily has impressed Curtis claiming "He'll be the first one I ask, now" however there will no doubt be interest from rivals for the jockey who is already sixteen winners clear of his personal best this season.

Captain Chris put in a majestic display, winning by an impressive 19 lengths at Ascot. Seems his class was too great for the rest of the field. Hunt Ball, who has now joined Nicky Henderson's yard, managed to claim third place after an absence from British racing & a string of unsuccessful outings in America. Hunt Ball performed better than expected & has a few options, with Cheltenham looking likely. Melodic Rendezvous & Zarkandar went head to head at Wincanton in a thriller that saw Melodic Rendezvous inch past Zarkander at the post, to win by half a length. Both boast impressive form but Melodic Rendezvous had the edge on the day. MR goes unaltered in the market for the champion hurdle.

Zaidpour & Vivega, two of Willie Mullins' French horses were the only two favourites not to get business done at Navan on Sunday. Zaidpour's talents were not enough to hold back former champion bumper hero, Dunguib. Plagued with injuries, Dungib seems to be back to his old ways, recording his first victory for three years. Trainer Philip Fenton, delighted with the win, hopes the progression is permanent. "That was lovely, it was a grand performance. He's not getting any younger, but he looked his old self. We were fairly confident we might be good enough."

My Tent Or Yours & Tanks For That delighted Nicky Henderson in the last two at Kempton. Henderson has been wary of sending his any of his elite out in the testing ground, hence the Kempton bumper. Mania overturns McCoy & Geraghty to land double on the day

The opener at Fairyhouse on Saturday saw, Man With Van come good in testing conditions. A very lightly raced eight year old, Man With Van is an interesting one with room for improvement. Trainer, Stuart Crawford said of the eight year old, "He might be eight but he's really like a big, green five-year-old he should keep improving." The first of two for Crawford at Fairyhouse, with Twentytwo's scoring in the last. Both went off 9-4 favourite.

Big Buck’s Returns

Cheltenham on Saturday saw the highly anticipated return of Big Buck's. After 420 days sidelined with a tendon injury, the superstar hurdler gave Sam Twiston-davies a feel of things to come. Although being beaten by At Fishers Cross & Knockara Beau, trainer Paul Nicholls was happy with the run & no doubt needed it before the World Hurdle test. "He jumped & travelled with all his old zest & just got tired from the back of the last. The ground was very testing & I toyed with taking him out, but I was desperate to get a race into him before the World Hurdle". Big buck's goes joint favourite with Annie Power (paddy power). The Willie Mullin's trained mare extended her unbeaten run to 10 from 10 on Saturday at Doncaster . A slight fault over the last wasn't enough to give her opponents any edge as Ruby rode clear at 1/6 on. Main threat Cockney Sparrow had fallen two from home, giving Annie Power a pressure-less finish I personally think she will be there to challenge Big Buck's, should Mullins send her to the world hurdle. what a contest its panning out to be. Doncaster also held the 3 mile, Sky Bet chase. Nicholls' Unioniste headed the betting, but as is often the case in big fields such as this one, it can be a bit of a lottery. Nick Scholfield battled round & made all on The Rainbow Hunter at 25/1, to claim the prize money. Hopefully some of you managed to take advantage of the big priced winner, but it was perhaps one for the bookies. Last of the 9 who finished was Grand National winner, Auroras Encore

Long Run looks to target Kempton before Grand National

Long Run could line up in the £100,000 Kempton Park Chase on February 22 as a stepping stone to the Crabbie's Grand National.

Owner Robert Waley-Cohen is said to be eyeing up a crack for the Aintree showpiece in April with his 2011 Cheltenham Gold Cup hero.

Long Run has been by all standards rather underwhelming so far this seasonand unseated his amateur rider, Waley-Cohen's son Sam, at the final fence when in fifth place and out of contention in the King George VI Chase at Kempton – a race he had a very good record in.

I have to say this year hasn't gone at all according to plan

The Nicky Henderson-trained horse has failed to match the form of that 2011 Gold Cup success in recent years and it is possible Long Run's connections may look down the handicap route. Waley-Cohen Snr is convinced his horse can return to his best form in Kempton despite a disappointing spell with sights on the Grand National subsequently.

"I have to say this year hasn't gone at all according to plan and he's not been in the prize money for any of his three runs," said Waley-Cohen.

"Had he not tired and made those two mistakes, he would probably have been third or fourth, or thereabouts in the King George, but that's not quite the same as last year when he won it after that great battle with Captain Chris.

"Maybe the handicapper has got it right and he's on the down grade and he should be marked down a lot. He hasn't had a massive number of races. He has had five years at the very top and there aren't many that go for more than that whatever age they start."

"I think the Grand National is the more obvious course to be going at the moment.”

The Cheltenham Festival is fast approaching & we're starting to see the shape of things to come. won impressively on Saturday at AscotHidden Cyclone was the only of the rivals to really challenge & even at that, finished up a country mile behind Gary Moore's contender. Irish Saint could be geared towards the Betfair hurdle next month, currently sitting at an attractive price of 10/1.

On Sunday Ruby Walsh opted to ride Willie Mullins' Vicky De L'Oasis over stable mate, Gitane Du Berlais. By default, Paul Townend got the latter ride. Once the duo had seen off the likes of Romantic Fashion & Dantes Firth, Walsh attempted to challenge. Contrary to Ruby's decision to ride Vicky De L'Oasis, Townend had a magnificent round & Gitane Du Berlais had enough in the tank to see off challenges from his stable mate.

Seven horses remain for Clarence House Chase at Ascot

Seven horses remain in the line-up for Saturday’s Grade 1 Sodexo Clarence House Chase at Ascot, with Sire De Grugy the 5-4 favourite with William Hill.

Whilst the Gary Moore-trained williamhill.com Desert Orchid Chase winner is a solid market leader, last year’s winner Somersby at 3-1 and 7-2 Irish-raider Hidden Cyclone have been well-supported with William Hill in recent days.

The eight-year-old gave trainer Gary Moore a first Grade One triumph when lifting the Tingle Creek Chase at Sandown in early December and then took full advantage of Sprinter Sacre being pulled up to capture the Desert Orchid Chase at Kempton.

Somersby's sole success at the top level came in this contest in 2012, having been short-headed by Master Minded 12 months earlier. He was also third to Sprinter Sacre last winter when the race was run at Cheltenham after Ascot was lost to the weather.

The Mick Channon-trained 10-year-old will try to land an emotional victory following the recent death of Terry Biddlecombe, husband of Somersby's retired former handler Henrietta Knight.

There were three withdrawals at the 48-hour final declaration stage – De Bromhead's other entry Special Tiara, Fox Appeal and French Opera.

The meeting is not in doubt but conditions are expected to be testing. Clerk of the course Chris Stickels described the going as heavy, soft in places on Thursday, with more rain on the way.

Hidden Cyclone has been particularly popular with William Hill and his backers are hoping he can leave the opposition in a spin on Saturday,” said firm spokesman Jon Ivan-Duke.

Jockey Martin Dwyer recovering from Southwell Fall

Jockey Martin Dwyer is recovering from a fall in which the impact was so strong it reportedly split his helmet.

The Tullow Tank road to Cheltenham

The Tullow Tank will have his next run in the Deloitte Novice Hurdle at Leopardstown on February 9 before heading to Cheltenham in March.

Philip Fenton's six-year-old has won his last four races, including two Grade Ones in December, in the style of a rapidly-improving horse and will now aim for a top-level hat-trick.

"The Deloitte will be the next stop for him," said Fenton, who won the race with Dunguib in 2010.

"I thought he was very impressive the other day. The further they went the more impressive he became.

"He was tapped a little for toe, but that's just the way he races. When they crossed the line he looked like he could go round again.

"He's just a chaser in the making so we won't overdo him this year," Fenton told At The Races.
