Royal Ascot Round Up

That's Royal Ascot over for another year & it hasn't been without the usual upsets. On day one we saw the classy Kingman come to play, in the feature of the day. Kingman now leads Night Of Thunder 2 from 3, & a solid first of the meeting for James Doyle. Kingman was patiently rode at the back of the field for a long way out. When Doyle asked Kingman to reel in Night Of Thunder, there was a bit to left do with the line approaching. Once shook up there was no chance Night Of Thunder was going to press on after making virtually all the running. Doyle said after the race, of Kingman. "He's got so much pace, he's almost climbing over the back of them wanting them to go quicker."

Treve came from France boasting impressive form in the book, having only been beaten only once (last time out). Frankie Dettori & trainer Criquette Head-Maarek were confident in her chances, as were bookmakers, sending her off oddson at 8/11. When it came to the deciding stages Treve couldn't quicken up whatsoever as The Fugue & Magician kicked on for home. The Fugue went on to win impressively, chased home by Magician, for the top spot. After the race, it has been reported, Treve was experiencing problems with her feet earlier in the week but Criquette Head-Maarek claimed "I had problem with her feet not long ago, but it seemed as though everything was fine again. We'll have to see. She's not blowing at all, and a horse that is sick blows hard after a race like that"Treve has been scanned since returning home to Chantilly & is awaiting test results.

Leading light ran out a stormer in the gold cup on Wednesday to deny the queens horse, Estimate. The task looked too much at one point as Brown Panther, Estimate & Missunited were all in with a chance, but Joseph did well to hold out & take home the 6th Royal Ascot Gold cup for his father, Aiden O'Brien. Joseph received a £3000 fine & a 7 day ban for excessive use of the whip.

Day 4 was tricky for punters, with not a single favourite winning. O'Brien's Adelaide was highly fancied in the King Edward VII Stakes & the money was pouring in before the off. Joseph held a good position throughout, but at the business end, Snow Sky, Scotland & Bunker were staying on to deliver a challenge. Eagle Top came from the back to power past Adelaide & Snow Sky, who's only response was to chase him to the finishing post. 3 & 1/4 lengths separated William Buick & Joseph O'Brien. This was only the third time out for the Gosden trained 3 year old & looks to be a serious asset & future prospect.

The highlight of the final day for me had to be Telescope, who looked seriously impressive when kicking on by 7 lengths to dismiss the field. Once Ryan Moore had asked for more there was no reeling him in, extending his lead stride by stride. Telescope looks poised to step up to group one company & has a few options to choose from. Telescope's odds have been rumbled for the Prix de l'Arc de Triomphe & is now as short as 16/1. Ryan Moore took home top jockey riding 6 winners all in all, wrapping it up in the final race with Pique Souis for Willie Mullins.

A thrilling week, & I hope you all wound up in profit over the five days. Here's to hoping next year Gok Wan has other arrangements & someone who is interested in racing joins in, to talk about….. racing.
